Maurizio Limonta, Franco Ballatore, and Rosario Sala are getting lots of attention these days after successfully completing the first of two epic rides with humanitarian purpose. In part one of the destination-inspired “Kamchatkaraid” the trio travelled 26,000 kms across 26 countries over 90 days. Mid-way, the group stopped to visit the Emergency Rehabilitation Center of Sulaymaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan where they donated 26.000 Euros the proceeds of Sala’s book Africa Secondo Me. In April 2023, their route will take them through the Himalayan plateaus of the Pamirs and into Afghanistan to the emergency hospital in Anabah, the second charitable mission organized by these adventuring friends.
Judging by the differences between the initial itinerary and the final 2022 route, the Kamchatkaraid campaign was extensively adapted along the way. Originally meant to travel between Milan and Tokyo, the friends opted for a loop that accomplished their charitable goal but shaved three months off their trip.

Anyone who has completed this type of overland trip understands that there are many reasons why a massive undertaking of this kind could be thrown off course. Halfway through their trip, one of the riders posted a video that featured a pile of government documentation that was accumulated during their trip. Add one global pandemic and several violent conflicts into the usual bureaucracy and it isn’t surprising that the trajectory had to be recalculated.

Part 2 of the Kamchatkaraid collaboration, now subtitled “Roads of Bones” on their Instagram, is scheduled to depart again from Milan by motorcycle, touch down in a variety of challenging terrain before it culminates in an extensive overland exploration of Japan. This time Limonta, Ballatore, and Sala will be taking their bikes on water crossings, and also get off their bikes to trek both in the Wakhan Valley of Afghanistan and the Siberian Peninsula Kamchatka.
Stay tuned to their travels on any of Kamchatkaraid’s socials, especially their Instagram, for the most comprehensive updates of their progress.
