Triumph is launching its own dedicated sustainable fuel testing program at its Global R&D facilities in Hinckley. The goal? Move to sustainable fuels for racing.
The British manufacturer is already supplying the engines for the Moto2 world championship. And now, in partnership with Dorna, the program hopes to deliver a move to E40 fuel in Moto2 by 2024.
But testing and research don’t end there. Triumph will continue to work to develop sustainable race fuels and hopes to transition the series to E100 by 2027.
Testing to date includes all dimensions of racing engine performance development. According to Triumph, whatever sustainable fuel it comes up with will “…continue to deliver the exciting triple powered, torque-rich, record-breaking performance that the riders love.”
Electric motorcycles
As we have previously covered, Triumph is also working on electric motorcycle technology. Their TE-1 electric motorcycle was developed with the Formula 1 company Williams Advanced Engineering. While the bike has nothing to do with pourable sustainable fuels, Triumph says its sustainable fuel testing program complements electrification. They claim it underlines Triumph’s focus on ensuring that motorcycling can continue for riders and fans many years into the future.

It is clear that Triumph takes the environmental impact of powered two-wheelers seriously. Their Chief Product Officer, Steve Sargent, had this to say about its environmental programs:
“Ultimately, our aim is always to take all the learnings we gain from racing to make our road bikes even better, which of course encompasses not just performance but also their impact on the environment. I can tell you that everybody here at Triumph is very excited to be involved in such significant developments at such a pivotal moment in motorcycle history.”
Many motorcycle manufacturers are now taking environmental impacts seriously. Electrification seems to be coming to motorcycles whether we want it or not. So it is good to see that Triumph is looking at additional alternatives. At least in Triumph’s eyes, ICE motorcycling is not yet dead.
