It’s been a while since KTM has significantly updated its big-bore adventure bike, but it looks like that’s about to change. European motorcycle magazines are showing off spy snaps of what looks to be a new KTM 1290 Super Adventure undergoing testing on public streets.
To see the photos on Italy’s Moto.it website, click here. You can also see other photos of the bike at Germany’s Motorrad site (we were not offered the photos for publication).
What you see there: A rider in what appears to be official KTM gear is out and about on what appears to be an updated 1290 Super Adventure. What’s new? Right away, you can see the old praying mantis headlights are gone, replaced by something more akin to a Tron movie or maybe from Ridley Scott’s latest Alien-franchise movies. Still looks very KTM-esque, and maybe it works for you, maybe it doesn’t.
Aside from that, what technical updates might we expect? No doubt there are changes to the engine and the bike’s electronics package, but if you look carefully under the headlight, you’ll see some bodywork that just might be hiding a radar emitter. That would explain some of the odd-looking paneling, and it would explain why we’re seeing a headlight redesign in the first place. With adaptive cruise control the latest hot tech that all manufacturers want to include on their machines, and KTM already building it into their 1290 series, it would make sense to have an updated system for the future. We are quickly seeing safety tech grow into its second generation and beyond, and KTM could be doing this here.
With a new BMW R1300 GS platform expected to be revealed next fall, we would also expect to see the new 1290 (or whatever it is) around the same time.
