Way back in April, we brought you news of a potential 400cc “Adventure Scooter” from French manufacturer Peugeot. We’re back to tell you that scooter is now reality.
Adventure Everything
With the apparent wild success of Honda’s ADV scooters, it’s no surprise that other manufacturers would be jumping on this particular trend. Also, for all the reasons adventure motorcycles are popular, why wouldn’t adventure scooters rank up there too?
The roaring lion marque introduces the XP400 – a 400cc single-cylinder scooter – and aims to make it available the first quarter of 2023. The machine itself will be available in two trim levels: one more road-oriented and one a bit dirtier. The rumored price is somewhere around €8,500.
Two Versions, One Dirtier
The dirt-friendly version, the GT, has knobbly tires mounted on spoked wheels, and ships with a tubular crash bar mounted to protect the bodywork. It also sports “bark buster” style hand guards as well as an aluminum plates under the floorboards as quasi-bash-plates. The road-friendlier version, dubbed Allure, has no such protections, and ships on cast wheels.
SUV of Scooters
Peugeot calls this new machine their “SUV” which, to be fair, rings true. It’s a larger, more capable scooter that can take on all the rotten bumpy roads you encounter in your travels through Europe. Start the video at 10:10 for the XP400 presentation.
Engine is Sprung Weight
Unlike a traditional scooter, the engine is mounted in the frame just forward of the rear wheel. The XP carries it as sprung weight. Upside down forks locate a 17-inch front wheel. A rear monoshock on an arch suspension hangs onto the 15-inch rear wheel. It’s slowed by dual 295mm discs up front with radial calipers and a single 240mm disc out back, and dual-channel ABS standard. Both bikes ship with Pirelli Scorpion Rally tires.
More Specs
Ride-by-wire provides two riding modes (road and rain) and the traction control can be switched off for the gnarlier stuff. The powerplant puts out 36.7hp and 38Nm (28ft-lb) of torque.
With the published weight of the thing at 231kg (509lbs), it comes in a bit on the porkier side. Remember, though, that the scooter body style keeps the weight very low.
The XP400 also features a 5” TFT display with bluetooth connectivity (and either its own mapping software or some version of CarPlay/Android Auto). It also comes standard with an adjustable windshield, a smartkey, and a USB socket. And don’t forget, it’s still a scooter, so it also has enough on-board storage to swallow a full-face helmet.
