After showing us some very interesting back corners of the island of Newfoundland, Kinga Tanajewska of the On Her Bike YouTube channel has crossed over into Labrador (see the ferry ride above!).
While the Trans Labrador Highway has long held a mythical status for riders in eastern North America, the reality is that the road itself is completely paved through Labrador’s borders, which definitely takes some of the challenge and excitement out of the ride.
There are still some issues to figure out, though! Such as: Where do you get gas? And where can you camp?
And, how to get your bike un-stuck, once you leave pavement?
Kinga also encounters the biggest challenge on the Trans-Lab, the one that most riders are completely unprepared for: Black flies!
Some viewers might be hoping for a bit more of a primer on what to see along the way in Labrador, but alas, Kinga (like so many of us!) was short on time and had to beat it through the Big Land in order to make it back to her return flight to Europe. However, the reality is, there’s not much to see between the Labrador Coast and Manic 5 dam. Except for rocks and trees, of course! Lots and lots of rocks and trees, and the occasional mine or other major infrastructure project.
The Labrador trip ends with a cross into northern Quebec, where the gravel road actually starts. Note that if you’re going to ride the Trans Labrador Highway, it’s totally paved, but Route 389 in Quebec is not, and if you want to do a loop, you’ll still end up riding lots of gravel until you hit Manic 5. But as Kinga shows above, there’s really nothing to worry about. People are doing Route 389 in little commuter cars! You don’t need a hardened overland rig on this well-groomed road.
