Motorcyclists using action cameras face a common problem: It’s not always easy to switch the camera on/off without stopping your motorcycle. Some brands do this better than other (GoPro’s cameras work do it fairly well, as do Sena’s lipstick cams and the Contour cams before them). But even those cameras, if they’re not attached to your helmet, the front of your body, or the area around your handlebars,—you can’t start or stop recording unless you slow the bike down.
So, remotes are what’s needed, and Insta360 is now launching a new remote control to turn its 360-degree cameras on/off. This means you can have one of their cams mounted to your front fender, the top of your helmet, on your rear subframe, wherever, and you can turn it on easily while in-flight with the remote’s help. The new Insta360 remote uses a Bluetooth 5.0 connection to make this happen.
Asking price for the new remote is $79.99 US.

Because the new remote works from 65 feet away, you can also potentially use it in drive-by videos, although this may be more difficult to achieve if your Bluetooth connection is lost when you’re not in the 65-foot range. This is something we’d have to test to know for sure.
The remote also comes with navigation componentry built-in. As per the press release:
Utilizing GLONASS, BD, and GPS networks in unison, the upgraded remote now has a stronger and more reliable connection. This means that even when deep in the mountains, or riding through a trail, your journey will be tracked with high accuracy … With the remote, there’s no need to record with your phone to get GPS stats data. Simply import your footage after shooting into the app, then overlay stats like speed, elevation, and more onto your video in a tap. These stats can add an extra punch to action footage and keep viewers engaged.
Whether you want all your ride telemetry and GPS data embedded in your video is another question, but it’s an option now.
To attach to your bike, Insta360 includes mounting bands, similar to watchbands. You can actually mount it in a similar fashion to a wristwatch.
Currently, the remote is only compatible with Insta360’s X3, ONE RS and ONE R cameras. Company reps say it will also be compatible with the ONE X2 camera in the future, but that’s not going to be the case at launch.
