Kawasaki Recalls Certain Motorcycles For Cam Chain Tensioner Defect

Kawasaki Motors Corp., USA is recalling certain 2015 through 2023 motorcycles for a faulty component in the cam chain tensioner.  As a result of the problem, the engine in affected motorcycles may unexpectedly stop during operation.
Kawasaki’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to NHTSA
Kawasaki’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 3,172 motorcycles may be affected.
In the report, Kawasaki says:
“The plunger in the camshaft-chain tensioner can lock up during usage due to deterioration of internal parts. Continuous use in this condition can result in loss of engine power during use.”
Describing the safety risk, Kawasaki says:
“There is a risk that the engine could stop during operation due to the camshaft timing deviation.”

Determining if your bike is affected
Potentially affected bikes were produced between December 1, 2014, and September 27, 2022.  The affected machines fall within the following VIN ranges:
Range 1 : Begin : JKAZXCN10FA000065 End : JKBZXVJ17NA004304 Not sequential
Range 2 : Begin : JKBZXVB10JA000006 End : JKBZXVD17MA005141 Not sequential
Range 3 : Begin : JKAZRCL11MA000005 End : JKAZRCK16PA015234 Not sequential
Notification schedule
In its report to NHTSA, Kawasaki said it would notify dealers and owners on the following schedule:
Planned Dealer Notification Date: DEC 19, 2022 – DEC 19, 2022
Planned Owner Notification Date: DEC 21, 2022 – DEC 21, 2022
Kawasaki went on to say:
“KMC will distribute both electronic and paper copies of a Recall Service bulletin to all Kawasaki motorcycle dealers. KMC will mail the owner notification letter via U.S.P.S. enclosed in an envelope with the statement “Important Recall Safety Information” printed on the outside of the envelope.
Kawasaki’s repair plan
Owners should take their affected motorcycles to a Kawasaki dealer, where the dealer will determine whether the motorcycle is affected by this recall.  If the motorcycle is affected, the dealer will replace the cam chain tensioner and the associated gasket.  Kawasaki/dealers will provide all services at no cost.
If you’ve already had a problem with the front brake rotor and had it replaced at your cost, Kawasaki will reimburse you, stating:
If you have experienced the failure described above prior to receiving this letter and have paid to have it corrected, you may be eligible for full or partial reimbursement for your documented cost of repair(s). To apply for reimbursement, please send copies of current owner and VIN information along with copies of repair orders and payment confirmation to the following address: Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A.
