Vehicle collector, comedian and road warrior Jay Leno, 72, has been having a tough stretch as of late. Following a gasoline fire in November while working on a vintage car in which he suffered facial burns, Leno revealed to a Las Vegas publication that he suffered a series of bone-breaking injuries when he got clotheslined when he turned down a side street after smelling gas coming from a 1940 Indian he was riding.
Leno told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that someone had strung a line across the road and not marked it, and he didn’t see it until too late. He involuntarily stopped while the Indian continued on (and we can assume crashed), leaving Leno with a broken collarbone, broken kneecaps and fractured ribs. However, he appears to be healing from the January 17 crash, which he told the Journal he kept quiet about after his incident in November sparked massive media coverage.
To add insult to injury, his popular (or at least popular among ADVrider.com staff) CNBC show, Jay Leno’s Garage, has been axed after seven seasons. According to the Hollywood Reporter, CNBC is shuffling their lineup and Jay Leno is out while the more popular Shark Tank and Undercover Boss series are in. It does not appear the show was cancelled because of Leno’s injuries or accidents.
It’s no hardship for the hard-working Leno, who is worth well north of $500 million by most estimates and has been doing standup in Vegas for 15 years after leaving the Tonight Show desk. He has now signed on to do a regular show at the huge Encore Theater at the Wynn starting in March. And with all his JLG episodes online on his popular YouTube channel, he’s not hurting for income streams, he just some pain from some unlucky breaks while doing his favorite things.
Heal up, Jay, and stay off those side streets!
