ADVrider.com
Hello, ADVrider Inmates and welcome to Photos of the Week No. 46, a very special number as you all know, containing the spirit if not the money of our good friend Valentino Rossi, il Dottore, the Chuck Norris of motorcycle racing, the Rocky III of MotoGP, the Baryshnikov of . . . well, let’s face it, he’s no Baryshnikov. And to celebrate that, we’re breaking all the rules of ADVrider photo-of-the-weeks and bringing you some Holiday Cheer, a Featured Foto that pays homage to the season with a Christmas theme, the birth of Jesus, the birth of Krishna, and Mithra, the time of the Tree Festival, Chanukah, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, and according to the Internet, a Festival of Madmen, and a Festival of the Ass—which apparently isn’t what we had thought. Regardless, it’s a time to celebrate, so we present to you a photograph submitted by an ADVrider Inmate that says all that we think needs to be said, and we can take some joy from an image of peace and hopefulness in this crazy old world of ours. Our thanks, and yours, too, if we may pass them on, to Inmate @Stiernan, who says the motorcycle in the manger is a Husky FC, and it does seem to fit the scene. It’s a recent photo, though it expresses a theme that is a few thousand years old and still resonates. We do find the giraffe a little confusing, but we don’t want to impose our North American herbivore preferences on other people. A reindeer would have been nice, though. Just sayin’.
Snow like cotton
Here we are at Cottonwood Pass, with a BMW R1200 GS and GSA, in a photo taken a few years ago by @AJ41. That road just over the tank of the GSA looks like it might hold a few hairpins on the way down, just as if it was somewhere in the mountains of northern Italy, but it looks cool enough to want a set of grip warmers, and an electric vest under your riding gear.
Speaking of Rocky
Here is the 2016 Honda Africa Twin belonging to @schmittenhymer on the “rocky south shore” of Manitoulin Island, which lies in the upper reaches of Lake Huron, a body of water in Canada. This photo was taken a few months ago.
Scandinavian TET
Here are some photos from this year’s TET tour through Scandinanvia in August, a ride that took in the southern parts of the Norwegian and Swedish TET, says @C_H_R, who was riding a 2021 Yamaha Tenere 700. “It’s all green there—and there is a reason for that. You will have some rain.”
In the high altitudes there is still some snow in August. But nothing to worry—all tracks will be cleared.
You may meet some friendly natives on the streets
Nearly all of the gravel roads are verry well maintained. But sometimes you may find a challenging stretch of forgotten track to test your riding skills.
Explorations
A day trip last summer led @Ride365 over some beautiful country as he tried “to find a through-route from Larch Mountain” in Washington “to the Table Mountain area using the OSMAND app.
He was riding a 2002 Honda XR650R, and says some of the “roads” he was taking might not have been public, “but saw no signs, so on I went.”
I found a road that would have sealed the deal, but the USFS had converted it into a non-motorized trail. There wasn’t a gate, but I’m not that much of a hooligan, so I capitulated and went around. I spent the day exploring various options that showed on the map.
While I didn’t find the route I was hoping for, I did find some neat places, and that was definitely worth it. All in all, a good day out exploring!
Celebrating youth
Here is Kaden, who we presume is the son of contributor @Prefer Dirt, and who “could not wait to get his motorcycle endorsement.” You can see that it has made him happy, too! Pictures taken a few months ago.
As soon as he turned 16 he got his drivers license and took his motorcycle classes in the cold rain so that we could do this trip through Oregon in the coming summer. First picture is the Columbia River.
And below, the Blue Mountains.
The Steen Mountains (below).
Preparing to enter the Alvord Desert, and below that, “having fun in the Alvord Desert.”
Trip was just under 2000 miles. He navigated, camped, oil changes and overall grew his love of the outdoors and motorcycling.
A Christmas-card scene
Here, @Beebernitz has gone for a ride to Trail Ridge Road in Colorado “for the purpose of getting a picture to use for Xmas cards for my moto friends.” The pic was taken about six years ago in October. That’s a 1999 Honda VFR800, but he’s “going to update with a different bike next year.”
On the plains of Africa
Here we have @Karambisi and his 2022 AJP PR7 on “a recent trip in dry southern Masailand and Kilimanjaro.” He says the glacier on Kilimanjaro is “declining rapidly” but had “a light dusting of snow” when the picture below was taken a few weeks ago.
Here and below, “thirsty Masai, following their donkeys to a well some eight kilometers from their boma.”
Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania not Kenya as many people believe, it is also the highest ‘free standing’ mountain in the world.
All pictures taken in the United Republic of Tanzania.
Happy birthday!
Samuel says his “birthday present was 2 days off (from my wife and 1 year old son), when he visited his mother’s old weekend house in Hungary, riding a 2020 Honda CB500X.
“The way back I had some awesome trails in the forest.”
Landscapes
Mod4ever says there is “no need to go far from home to find wonderful places” like those in the photos below.
Only 60 km far from my home in the north of Tuscany there is this ex military base, no longer in use since a lot of years.
Wonderful landascape from Appennini mountains to Mar Ligure (Ligurian Sea). And a very exciting road to go there, together with a friend of mine. A very pleasant afternoon, in good company, along beautiful roads with my reliable Vespa!
Photos taken a couple of weeks ago, in Italy. He was riding a 1985 Piaggio Vespa PX200 Arcobaleno.
Hallowe’en forever!
@Stlskybob says he was “deep in the hills and creeks of Missouri” a few weeks ago on his 2017 Suzuki DR650 when he found the scenes below, including a “pumpkin display literally out in the middle of nowhere.”
Fyi I didn’t cross the purple line. Pretty sure I heard banjos off in the distance.
Pillion photographer
It was his wife who shot the picture below, from the pillion of his 2018 Honda Africa Twin, “on the MABR somewhere in West Virginia,” says @Walk-in Man.
And below, another shot of the Africa Twin “at a breakfast stop off the MABDR.”
And for our final picture of the week, “This is my ST1300 parked in the clouds atop Grandfather Mountain North Carolina. This was an East coast and Appellation trip with my wife. We traveled from our home in Louisiana a few years back.” That Honda ST1300 is a 2008 model.
And so, Inmates and visitors alike, we bid you a fond adieu and wish you a wonderfully happy time over the next week or two, no matter how you celebrate, and even if you don’t! Thanks for visiting and come back again!
