Good day, Inmates! Welcome to Photos of the Week number 42. We’re starting off this week with something a bit unusual, but it’s a picture that captured our hearts here at the ADVrider mansion in Palm Pines, Ontario. We don’t know who this little girl is, but we’re inclined to say “Yes!” to whatever she’s asking for. She’s got one of those open, trusting faces that make meeting new people on your adventure such a pleasure. This Featured Photo was sent in by @Ohio_Danimal, who says “taking the time to try to relate to and befriend locals” has led him down “many happy trails,” and those are, you must admit, the best kind of trails. “To me, when traveling, the best part of it all is the people you meet.” Mr. _Danimal clearly believes that he can persuade the rest of us of his point, because he submitted 18 photos of people he met, which is about 12 photos too many for one submission. But we’re wearing a hole in the bottom of the photo barrel this week—not that the photos aren’t great; they are!—but we’re awfully close to running pictures of Steve’s cat, so we’ll show them all anyway. Just not right now. Scroll down for the rest of this lovely crowd. But first, a few other subs for your joy.
He’s just keepin’ us goin’
Many thanks to, C_H_R, an inmate from northern Germany, “Where the land is flat,” for his submission. “To keep the Inmate Photos running just two shots from my trip to Iceland, Aug 2020.”
Taken in the Laki Region that is covered with volcanic ash from a “recent” eruption in 1783/1784. Nice riding on the black ash pistes with some water crossings.
That’s a 2012 BMW G650 GS Sertao, and the photos were shot with a Panasonic Lumix.
The Oregon Trail
Here is a shot of @layzrider’s Honda CRF300L, taken a few months ago on a trail in the Tilamook Forest of Oregon, a state on the left edge of the USA. Kinda makes you wonder where that narrow line in the dirt is going. (And speaking personally, we love the spelling of this contributor’s handle—clever.)
Georgia in my viewfinder
Here is a shot taken by @Desk_Jockey last spring. “Stopped for a photo op at the St. Marys River in NE Florida during a March 2022 ride.” That’s Georgia, says Mr. _Jockey “on the opposite side.” Isn’t that just like Georgia? And that bike? A 2017 Honda VFR1200X, but you did know that.
Doing life
Here are two more photos by Desk_Jockey, taken in May on a three-day loop to and through the North Carolina and Georgia mountains, which trip he returned from with a ride through the northeast corner of Florida via the Georgia backroads.
Along the way, I passed this cemetery with long rows of uniform white crosses. I was all the way past when I realized that I didn’t see any names, only numbers on the markers. I had to turn around to investigate this, and found the single headstone. A sobering place as I contemplated who was buried here and why. I’ve since read that there are about 700 graves here.
More from Oregon. And Nevada
But not from Mr Layz. These are, in fact, from Inmate @FreeWheelin, who says he’s been meaning to send them for a while (“Your recent plea for more photos got me motivated.”) And we appreciate that! “These photos are from a 5 day trip in SE Oregon / NW Nevada this year in late May. We covered about 750 miles (200 miles of pavement and 550 on dirt).”
This area is exceptionally remote.
On several days we never passed another vehicle, usually no cell coverage, hardly any towns and carrying gas was essential.
If you like a cool microbrew and a burger at the end of a long day, look elsewhere. This ride is best for those that really don’t like people much (the Brit I was riding with excelled in that role) and prefer to stumble their way through the backcountry because the GPS doesn’t include these roads.
This part of the country makes the Bob Marshall Wilderness here in Montana seem downright suburban.
Our submitter’s bike was a 2018 Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT, and the other, a BMW GS800, possibly a 2013 model.
Friendly face
Another of the people met by Ohio_Danimal on his travels. We have no information about this fellow, but we think those animals behind him are alpacas, judging by absolutely nothing but guesswork.
Lava tubes
Below a shot taken back when your average smart phone used film to make pictures, our friend TC on his BMW R1150 GS, “on my way to have a look at the Undar Lava Tubes” in “far north Queensland.”
All the faces
And finally, to close out the week, the rest of the people met and photographed by Ohio_Danimal.
So, thanks to all who submitted, and a heartfelt plea for the rest of you: we need your photos! We’ll be more than happy to show them to the world of adv riders right here, so do dig them out and send them, old or new, and tell us a little about where they were shot. And for now, cheers! Ride safely, and ride adventurously!
