ADVrider.com
Hello, ADVrider Inmates and visitors to the World’s Best Adventure Website. Here we are more than halfway through January and on our way to either a summer riding season, or a winter riding season, depending on your relationship to the equator. We are happy to be here with you again and we’re staring off with a picture that reminds us of waterfalls. Because it’s a picture of a waterfall. We like to keep things simple here. No metaphors, whatever that is. Not even anything like a simile. So here we are with @KennyBooBear enjoying winter in northern California, which he says “frequently means stretches of rain that last weeks, and sometimes even months without halt.”
Of course the photo is also a picture of a 2022 Aprilia Tuareg 660, which looks especially pretty in front of that descending H2O. “This winter has been particularly wet, leaving few opportunities for enjoying a dry ride. The upside to all of this moisture is that when the deluge ceases, I’m met with scenery like this in my own backyard, even if the pause in the weather is only brief.” Brief, of course, is better than not.
These were shot between bands of rain on Yankee Jim’s Road, just outside of Colfax, California. There are currently no fewer than 6 seasonal waterfalls cascading down the canyon walls. If you’re within an hour or two, it’s a spectacular ride down and back up the other side of the American River Canyon.
And now you’ll have noticed, Dear Readers, that we’re begging for pictures rather soon in our stay this week. There’s a reason for that, which I’ll get to after a few more. Stay with us, please.
Ahh, winter at last
Here is the 2018 Royal Enfield Himalayan of @Scottfree, who says he’s had a “white-ish” Christmas with “maybe an inch and a half of snow followed by suz-zero (Fahrenheit) temperatures for the holiday weekend.” A few days later, he says, “things had warmed up to around zero Celsius, so I went for a ride.” This is what he ran into. “Remember that inch and a half of snow? Seems like the wind picked it up off the fields and dropped it all on this bridge. Go figure.”
Second picture: This is an official Rutland Township Rustic Road. Here we actually do have an inch or so of snow, mixed with a thin layer of loose gravel on top of frozen dirt. It made for a fun ride, and a nice end to 2022.
ScottFree doesn’t tell us, but the Internet says Rutland Township might be in the US state of Illinois. Our contributor does provide some info on the photos, though: “iPhone 13 Pro, telephoto lens. Long lens (equivalent to 77mm on a 35mm camera) and shooting from a distance makes a photo that looks more like what you see with your eyes.”
Humpty bumpy
Seems as though our contributor Saltcured didn’t have a great fall, anyway. We’re not sure if riding a 2009 Suzuki DL650 on this cobblestone road would be a comfortable experience, but it seems that bike and rider survived the bumps on this January ride. “Taken on the 20km cobblestone road to the abandoned mining town Real de Catorce in Mexico.”
Down but not out
Inmate Dave sent us this pic of a KTM that’s only resting, in the way that KTMs do (when you’re a KTM, nothing’s uncomfortable). “I don’t think this qualifies as a crash. If your bike never touches the ground and no bones get broken, and no gas spills, Is it really a crash?” We are not qualified to answer that question. Fortunately.
And now for a few more sent in by Dave, who emailed them to Steve when he learned of our great need. You can submit photos by clicking on the big orange thing here:
That’s Dave’s BMW G650 XChallenge standing in front of a little house on a prairie. We’re supposing it doesn’t get very windy around there.
It’s winter in the Pacific Northwest—gloomy and wet first week of January. Dreaming of sunny, warm weather, and my recent trip on section 5 and 6 on the WABDR. I use an abandoned iPhone for navigation using Gaia, shockingly it works.
Camping freeze dried food is always my favorite; cold-chicken salad for anyone.? I was hungry, therefore, it tastes really really good.
Spent the day poking around Ruby, Washington. It’s fun exploring some of the historical Washington mining towns.
Our thanks to Dave for sending in the above photos, and of course to all who submitted. Thank you!
Sunset on a first ride
Here is @OpposingGravity’s 2016 BMW R1200GSA relaxing in the early evening. “Starting 2023 off right. First ride of the year, January 1st caught a sunset on Chuckanut drive, in Northwest Washington.”
And that, Inmates and visitors, is it for this week. We’re out of pictures, and if good ol’ Dave hadn’t sent us a batch by email we’d have said this sooner. Or not at all—because we really do need more than half a dozen photos to make a POTW. It’s like that shack eight pictures up from here: one good windstorm and it’s nothing but sticks, which is a poor analogy but it’s all we have. Speaking of all we have, you’ve just seen them, so please send us your photos. It’s easy, and it’ll make you happy. Just click on the big orange thing right below here.
And now we’ll say goodnight and thanks for coming by. We hope to see you again in a week, and to everyone, no matter what, have a safe and very happy 2023!
