[[{“value”:”Joan Pedrero is continuing his unlikely career into the rally raid history books with yet another win on the Harley-Davidson Pan America—sort of. Pedrero didn’t take the overall title, but he did grab the win in the Baja Aragon’s maxi-trail class last month, riding H-D’s big-bore adventure bike.
The maxi-trail class consisted of bikes over 600cc, which results in quite a ride range, and some other eligible machines would have been much better-suited to desert racing than the big Pan-Am. Eight other bikes were entered into this class in the 2024 race. But even if Pedrero had been competing in a class of one, I don’t think it would have mattered, for two reasons.
First, if you had said 10 years ago that Harley-Davidson would make an adventure bike capable of entering a rally raid in basically production form, people would have said you were nuts—but here we are. This wasn’t a one-off race, either. Pedrero has entered several races with this bike so far, even the Africa Eco race, and finished.
Second, he might not have a lot of top-tier competition in his own category, but Pedrero is beating a lot of other bikes in both maxi-trail and the general standings. From what I can make out of the standings here, he was 21st overall in the general standings. Not only did he beat all the other big-bore riders, he also beat 60+ other riders on far better-suited machines. Obviously that says a lot about his own talent, but it also shows the bike is indeed capable of taking a beating, if the pilot knows what they’re doing…
