Happy Thanksgiving, American ADVers!
Of course, our Canadian inmates already celebrated their version of the holiday back in October (they have to get a head start on things, just in case they get snowed in early… ) and in other countries, they have their own dates for a holiday along these general lines: Ideally, a day off work, time with family, and a good dinner to remind you how much we really have.
Or maybe they do things differently wherever you’re from, or in your culture or family. But even if that’s the case, there’s a lot to be thankful for this year. COVID-19 restrictions have eased or disappeared, allowing travel between borders that were closed for months or years. Despite the naysayers of doom telling us that leaders from the left or right would bring us into World War III, we’ve avoided it so far. And for most of us, although funds are almost certainly getting tighter, we still have enough money to own and ride motorcycles, explore the backcountry, or even travel abroad on two wheels. And we can do so safely, protected by the law almost everywhere we travel.
At what other point in history has that been possible? Yeah, 200 years ago you could explore some region that nobody from your country/tribe/civilization had ever visited before—but you had to leave everything behind to do so, unless you were rich. Want to see the world in the 1800s? You’d have to sign on with a whaling ship or the navy, or become a mountain man, or work for the government administration or trading companies in some overseas colony. Or you could take up the life of a vagrant or tramp, but that’s not a lifestyle most would aspire to, then or now.
Now, travel abroad or to the backcountry is only a plane flight or a motorcycle ride away. And even if we can’t afford it right now, most of us have at least the potential to do so in the future.
So—enjoy your holiday today and remember Thanksgiving is more than just a chance to eat a massive turkey. It’s a time we should remember just how much opportunity we have, and to be grateful for it.
