Even if you search out thoughtfully designed and well-made gear and you’re obsessed with reducing the volume and weight of electronics you put on your bike, you might have missed seeing this equipment. This isn’t a sponsored post, just some kit that I found that works very well, and I figure like-minded riders might find it useful as well.
The phone in your pocket probably takes great photos, you can’t remember the last time you held a full-sized camera because now the phone does everything you need, be it still or video and it’s always with you: Does this describe you?
You don’t want a GoPro or an Insta360 or any other action camera, simply for the fact it’s something else to carry, extra batteries, a charger, cables, a new app to learn, files to convert and process when your phone can do basically the same thing: Does this still describe you?
Back in October, there were two articles about Peak Design phone mounts, here and here, They mostly talked about the phone as a navigation unit mounted on the bars using a vibration reduction system.
If you’re considering taking this route, then you understand the prices are at the top end of the scale, It will cost you $30 or so for a phone case and $90 for a handlebar mount, but the quality is exceptional and the design well thought out.
Does Peak Design make anything else that might work for adventure riders? How about this Mobile Creator Kit. You might have skimmed by it, but I actually bought one.
The kit has three pieces of plastic and aluminum. The phone mount, a GoPro-styled mount adaptor, and a 1/4-20 tripod adaptor

If you are a lover of Peak Design you might already own a Capture Clip. Add a cheap tabletop tripod, and you have a mini photo/video setup that can cover almost all your filming bases.

I have this tripod I picked up on Amazon for $26. It extends to 35″ and is small enough to fit in my tank bag or hydration pack and not know it’s there. Using the Peak Design gear and my phone, I now have a selfie stick and a small tripod I can easily take from my tank bag and firmly attach the phone, put it on the trail, set it up in landscape or portrait mode, and do ride-by shots/ video.

If I unclip it from the tripod or bars and attach it to my Capture Clip, I have a rider’s view. I can set it to portrait or landscape, and since phones are now getting anti-shake features and are feature improved waterproofing, is the phone all that’s needed to capture most of your image needs?

There’s barely a weight penalty, with this setup coming in at 13.9oz/392 grams.
