[[{“value”:”Everyone gets hot and bothered when a new action camera hits the market—well, at least the tech geeks do—but the software behind that camera can be just as important as the specs on the hardware. Maybe even more-so. With that in mind, Insta360 has just announced an update to its proprietary app, with enhanced AI-powered editing available. Their official launch video is below:

But of course it looks good—they’re pros, with good-looking athletes in the video. What if a schmuck like me gets their hands on this tech? Like most of you, I was not born with a video editing software suite by my cradle-side, and the editing process inevitably bogs me down. I wondered if the updated AI editing would make the job easier, so I took off to the woods around my house with an Insta360 X4 (see review here) to capture footage.
Upon returning home, I plugged the clips into Insta360’s app, clicked the AI edit button, and several billion beeps and bloops later, we have this:

And for the record, I have no idea how that music got chosen for that video. As you can see, the AI had some choices that you or I wouldn’t have probably picked as highlights of this trip, and it certainly needs some guidance.
My takeaways are these:

The AI feature definitely makes editing the raw 360-degree footage easier. If you have zero previous experience with this sort of software, like I did when I first used it a couple of years back, the AI function will spit out something usable.
However, the AI doesn’t automatically grab the angles you want, or run the length you want. It can cut an extended clip down to a shorter run-time, but sometimes you don’t get the footage you do want, or you get footage you don’t want. A good example of this is the bridge clip in my footage above. I would have been happy with a simple pan shot, but the AI got the camera to go through some other hijinks instead.
For this reason, there’s actually another Edit feature once you’ve got the AI editing function running, that lets you fine-tune its behavior. Waitaminnit—weren’t we trying to get away from this time-consuming, fidgety stuff? Yes, but now what’s actually happening is this: You can use the basic AI edit if you aren’t fussy, but if you are fussy, you can fine-tune the AI’s output to string together cookie-cutter camera tricks and splice them into your footage. It’s not intended for dull pan-and-scan shots, it’s so you can get cool loopty-loop tricks via the “Automatic Movement Templates” that Insta360 mentions in its PR below.

Once you look at the big picture, I think this app update is great news for riders who want to make moto videos.
This isn’t a complete “Easy Button.” The app still requires work and a learning curve for truly good footage, not to mention an understanding of lighting, mounting angles and so on. But the app’s constant improvement means the editing is a lot less difficult than it used to be, and if you want to include the camera tricks that previously took a steep learning curve, well—they’re only a click away now. And as the app continuously updates, I expect more features that are useful for motorcyclists to continue coming in over the months ahead.

Huge Insta360 App Update: Smarter AI, Easier 360º Editing
360º editing just got a whole lot smarter. The new Insta360 app update brings some incredible improvements and 40+ preset movement templates that make editing a breeze. By constantly innovating new ways to edit creative footage, it’s no surprise Insta360 is leading the way in 360º action cameras, making them accessible to beginners and professionals alike.
The updates are available for all 360º footage from Insta360 cameras, including X4, X3, X2 and RS (with the 360º lens). Check them out!
Automatic Scene Recognition
Immersive stories in seconds. AI now identifies the objects or subjects in the footage and the interaction between them. Combined with scene recognition (the type of video it is, such as winter sports or travel), it automatically filters the best shots for you to choose and export.
That means instead of just identifying a child and parent, the app can identify the interaction between them to create a story. Amazing, right?
40+ Automatic Movement Templates
Creating dynamic videos doesn’t need to be hard. If you’re not sure how to create movements between keyframes, use the new automatic templates to do it for you! Roll, pan, push and more between points in the timeline in just a few taps.
To add a movement, tap the yellow + icon at the start point, adjust the perspective, tap “Movement” and choose a template. You can drag it across the timeline to make it as slow or as fast as you want and adjust the perspective of the end point. When you’re done, the video will smoothly transition between the points with a dynamic movement created in an instant!
You can add and modify movements in AI Edit and Pro Edit on the Insta360 app.
These new updates make editing pro-looking 360º videos accessible to everyone. Update your Insta360 app to the latest version today for easier creative editing without limits!
