Mahindra-owned Classic Legends, the company responsible for resurrecting the Jawa, BSA, and Yezdi brands, has a very real problem. A court in India says the company must stop selling all Yezdi-branded motorcycles within a month. Further, the court ruled the Yezdi brand may not be used at all.
According to the ruling, the Yezdi brand still falls under the ownership of Ideal Jawa (India) Ltd. That’s because it appears the liquidation of the company’s assets is still pending resolution. And unfortunately for Classic Legends, the court quashed all trademark and registration certificates that the Registrar of Trademarks had already issued. In addition, the court also fined the company and an executive 1M Rupees (~$12,000).

Not unexpectedly, a company executive says it will file an appeal. But in a more interesting aspect, according to BikeAdvice.in, Yezdi says it will NOT stop manufacturing and selling their motorcycles for the time being.
Yezdi currently sells three different models in India. One is the Royal Enfield Himalayan lookalike Adventure. They also manufacture a roadster model called, not surprisingly, the Roadster and a scrambler model called, you guessed it, the Scrambler.
This case is a significant setback for the Yezdi brand, Classic Legends, and Mahindra. Sales of the newly resurrected brand have been less than anticipated, and this ruling obviously will have a negative impact.
It will be interesting to see how this court case pans out. How a major conglomerate like Mahindra and the now well-known Classic Legends could get this far without a complete resolution of the Ideal Jawa (India) Ltd. liquidation is quite a mystery.
