2022 was an excellent year for BMW Motorrad (BMW). BMW achieved its best sales result in the company’s history. All up, the German manufacturer sold 202,895 motorcycles and scooters, equating to a +4.4 percent global increase in sales.
Big GSs lead the way.
BMW’s largest GS’s once again led sales for the company. Its R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure bikes totaled 60,000 units in 2022. That means from BMW’s large and diverse model lineup, the big GSs accounted for approximately 30 percent of the company’s total sales.
European sales
As a German manufacturer, BMW’s largest single market is in its home country. In total, BMW sold 24,129 motorcycles and scooters in Germany in 2022. BMW’s next largest European market was France, with 21,223 vehicles sold. That equates to an increase of 6.7 percent from last year. Unfortunately, BMW did not announce sales volumes for other European countries but summed up its European market sales as “stable.”
Record sales in other parts of the world
BMW’s 2022 sales in other parts of the world were even better, with several countries ending 2022 with their own records.
BMW’s Asian sales
Overall, BMW’s sales in Asia grew to 46,332 units, an increase of 7.4 percent. China’s sales were 15,404 units, up 7.7 percent. India also saw an increase with 7,282 units sold, equating to a significant 40.3 percent increase.
North American sales
North America also boosted BMW’s sales, recording 20,295 units sold, an increase of 11 percent. Of those sales, 17,690 units and a 10.4 percent increase came from the USA.
Latin America sales
Latin America played a big part in 2022’s success for BMW. By the end of the year, BMW had sold 25,480 units equating to a 17.2 % increase. At the forefront of those sales was Brazil setting a record with 13,051 vehicles sold, representing an increase of 17 percent compared to the previous year.
As you might expect in a press release about BMW Motorrad’s record-setting sales, BMW CEO Dr. Markus Schramm said:
“I would like to express my sincere thanks to our customers worldwide for the great trust they have placed in us again in 2022. The record result in 2022 clearly proves that our attractive product range and our brand are very popular with customers. I look forward to our centenary year in 2023 with great joy and confidence.”
It’s interesting to note that BMW made its most significant gains outside of Europe. What do you think is causing this?
