[[{“value”:”The German vehicle manufacturer BMW Group recently released its half-year earnings report. The report is quite extensive as it covers all of the Group’s entities, including the brands BMW, Mini, Rolls Royce, and, of course, BMW Motorrad (motorcycles).

Overall, the group’s results were good but not outstanding. Generally, deliveries of new motorcycles (and cars) increased slightly and returned an EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes – “profit”)  between 8 and 10 percent.

Perhaps not unexpectedly, BMW touted its current electric vehicle production and forward-looking aspirations throughout its automobile segments. But one slide in particular made certain that investors knew that although their focus was on electrification, they were still open to other forms of mobility. Quoting from one  slide:
“Focus on electrification – in chorus with demand-oriented offers of other powertrains.”
Focus On More Than Electric Mobility
In other words, they haven’t closed the doors on other forms of powered mobility.

And it seems that BMW thinks that hydrogen-powered vehicles may have a place in their lineup. One slide confirms their line of thinking with the title:
“Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology Has The Potential To Serve As Another Pillar InThe BMW Group’s Future Drive System Portfolio.”

Hydrogen and hydrogen fuel cell technology is not a novel approach. Kawasaki has already unveiled its hydrogen-powered hyperbike, and Suzuki says one is in its future as well. But it’s not just those two manufacturers who are interested in hydrogen-powered mobility. Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Suzuki are all investigating hydrogen power with the help of automotive giant Toyota.
BMW Motorrad Financial Performance
But let’s concentrate on where BMW Motorrad falls into the Group’s financial results. BMW crowed that its retail sales volumes have been on the rise for the last 10 years with the exception of 2020 when COVID impacted the sales of pretty much everything. During the period, sales of BMW motorcycles rose by approximately 82 percent. In the first half of 2024, BMW says it delivered over 113,000 motorcycles worldwide. And the news for BMW Motorrad’s profit was decent. In total, BMW Motorrad’s 2024 first half-year revenue comes in at €1.04B (~$1.14), which is a slight increase over the same period of 2023, where revenue came in at €1.0B (~$1.09B). Ultimately, the BMW Group says its motorcycle division will come in with an expected end-of-year profit result of around 10 percent. That amount, however, represents a 2 percent year-over-year fall from 2023.

With BMW Motorrad’s good financial performance and their stated outlook for mobility being based more than electric vehicles, it looks like the BMW Group is covering all the bases.
