The BMW R1250GS (aka GS1250) was designed and marketed as an adventure bike, and it’s done nothing but excel in that category. While it might not be the cheapest ADV bike on the market, the GS remains one of the best.
“It’s won every MCN group test and award since it was released. It’s never hard to see why.” –MCN
Though the GS1250 might look a bit clumsy in stock trim, it isn’t. With a 134-bhp “Shift Cam” boxer engine, sophisticated rider aids, and a highly-hauded chassis, the GS1250 is surprisingly adept on pavement. The blistering runs of Greg Mansell in the Bouley Bay Hill Climb on his specially-prepped GS “supermoto” showcase the bike’s potential — Mansell was just 0.7 seconds off the record in 2024!

Dani Weidmann of Switzerland’s VTR Customs is another racer who’s discovered the big Boxer’s potential on the street and track. As a multi-time national supermoto and motocross champion, Dani knows what’s what when it comes to tight tracks and twisties, where “backing it in” to corners is standard operating procedure.
Previously we featured his shop’s R1250GS supermoto — the first time we’d seen one of these beasts given the motard treatment.

Now Dani and VTR are back with a GS built to an even higher standard, a build they call the GS1250 “Technology” — a bike that really showcases what VTR can build for themselves and their clients.
“Technology was designed to be our High Tech Demo GS1250, going ‘all in’ on the accessories you can get.”
The bike sports a set of 17-inch Rotobox carbon wheels with specially-tuned Wilbers suspension, which retains BMW’s Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) — a system that allows for push-button suspension changes to adapt to varying conditions and riding styles.
Just about everything else on the bike has been swapped out for lighter, stronger, and/or better performing components, including an Akrapovic titanium exhaust, tinted rally windshield with titanium cover, shorter levers, and a Suter Racing slipper clutch that’s particularly well-adapted to motard-style antics:
“If you go Supermoto race style, you can have super smooth drifts as well, without having the rear wheel ‘jumping.’” -Dani
Other highlights include special number plates and paintwork, powder-coating of many OEM parts, and the work to pass Switzerland’s stringent Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre (MFK) inspection, which has been the bane of several custom-builders we know. Many of us take for granted the relative ease we have passing DMV or MOT inspections — things aren’t so simple in some countries.

Below is our quick interview with Dani, as well as a build sheet for the project. If you’re in Switzerland or Europe and in the market for a high-performance modern BMW, VTR Customs should be on your radar, if not at the top of your list.
BMW GS1250 Custom: Builder Interview

• What was the design concept and what influenced the build?
Technology was designed to be our High Tech Demo GS1250, going “all in” on accessories you can get. We strongly believe that, if only you can test and feel the difference, customers will buy high tech accessories for their own GS.

The first Technology 1250 we built was kept in almost standard design colors so as not to overrun costs. This one we decided that it must have a special VTR Custom design, since the cost with all these parts was high anyway. So the design reflected the budget levels which went into Technology 1250.

• Can you tell us what it’s like to ride?
Much more agile than standard 19” wheels, but not “nervous” – it rides perfect at all speeds. The Wilbers suspension adds a more sporty ride and better feel in terms of contact with the road – we did specially tuned the setup to be more sporty on the road.

The sound is incredibly nice. You even feel an immediate power gain from the Akrapovic Titanium, without even any test bench/dyno.

The Suter clutch provides a much better feeling for the clutch, and if you go Supermoto race style, you can have super smooth drifts as well, without having the rear wheel “jumping.”

• What is the meaning of the nickname?
Technology from the idea of all High End Technology built on one single GS.
And #50 is from the BMW Motorrad internal model Code K50 for the watercooled GS.
