When you sign up for a vintage enduro race there’s only one thing you can do: Go all in! You choose your vintage weapon and you start getting your vintage gear together.

I’m racing a 1966 Triumph, a TR6SC in a BSA Goldstar frame to be exact. The SC stands for sprint competition, only 260 ever made. The bike was built and raced in California until 2019 when I picked it up and brought it to Europe.

It is not a typical race where you all line up and race against your competitors, or at least you don’t have to. You can start when you want and with who you want. So during the day you find the guys that ride your speed, or a little bit faster and you ride with those. Making it a little bit your own race.
You can ride as many laps as you want.

Many laps I rode solo, for me that is racing against my own ghost. You never look behind you and you keep the throttle wide open, you never know when it’s going to catch you!! That can be quite difficult, many of the riders around you ride 80s or 90s bikes with very good suspension. They can take the jumps and bumps at fast speeds without a problem.
With old dual shocks in the rear and about 90-120mm suspension travel you really have to think about how you want to survive the big jumps. I’m choosing to land the jumps on the rear wheel before putting down the front wheel, helps me absorb the landing by using me knees. I think that’s how they did it back in the day.

What is really cool is when you are giving 100% on an old machine like this and you overtake some of the pre-95 guys. For them it must sound like a Spitfire aircraft is passing them.

With The Roadshow enduro I’m organising 60s and 90s-inspired vintage off-road trips in Spain, so you can imagine why I take being full period-correct so serious. If you can’t do it in style why would you even do it? It only makes it more fun.
I’m going for old crusty leather mx pants, black leather mx boots, leather gloves, wool shirt, open face helmet with a 1965 Canon super8 camera taped to the side to film some of the riding action.
I’m carrying a waxed canvas / leather backpack holding my tools / spare tubes / 1L fuel can in case of trouble. We’re racing in the woods with long up- and downhills, so in case of a breakdown I’m planning to fix my bike and not to push it back.
For me the Wheels & Waves races are a lot of fun, they attract very fast riders who also care about history and vintage style, making it the most beautiful thing to watch and to participate in.
