Honda Dax 1978: Factory-Sanctioned Fun

How do you know when a motorcycle scene is thriving? Simple: The factories are constantly producing cool new bikes, the buyers are constantly figuring out ways to customize them… and then the factories themselves get behind those efforts. With that in mind, check out this groovy retro from Thailand, the Honda Dax 1978.

Pardon the auto-roboto voice in that video above, but it’s pretty hard to get a native English speaker to cover minibikes in Asia! There’s another look at the bike below:

Wait—what’s the Honda Dax?
This minibike first broke cover in 2022. It’s based off the same 125 engine that appears in the Grom, the Trail 125, and other Honda minimoto models. Back then, we told you:
Looking at the bike, it’s a very familiar design, updated for the 2020s. You have a big steel tube frame with the fuel-injected, air-cooled engine hanging beneath—like the ’70s Dax, this engine is borrowed from elsewhere in Honda’s lineup. It’s the same 124cc single-cylinder that Honda uses in the Grom, the Monkey, the CT125, the Super Cub, and the MSX125 scooter. It should have a four-speed gearbox, and make roughly 9.5 horsepower at 7,500 rpm, and 7.7 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm.
Not a powerhouse, then. Like the rest of the new 125 lineup, the Dax is about low-priced fun, and is more likely to be used as a pit bike, an around-town runabout or even a stunt machine.

The Dax 1978 appears to be the exact same as the bike that launched in 2022, mechanically speaking, but it’s modified by Cub House with funky paint and also the option to add some vintage-looking trim such as a chromed rack. Cub House is a Honda-owned subsidiary in Thailand that’s focused on making cool customs from the minimoto lineup. Looks like they nailed it with this bike, and that leaves us with these parting questions: If the Dax was available in North America, would you buy it? And would you want this version of the Dax? Or are you still waiting to get your hands on a Trail 125?
