BMW has announced that 2022 was the Motorrad’s best year ever “I would like to express my sincere thanks to our customers worldwide for the great trust they have placed in us again in 2022. The record result in 2022 clearly proves that our attractive product range and our brand are very popular with customers. I look forward to our centenary year in 2023 with great joy and confidence.” for the company an in doing so proving yet again that the mainstream premium segment seems to be a very good place to do business. According to Markus Schramm, the man in charge of BMW Motorrad, 202,895 motorcycles and scooters were sold bearing the blue and white rondel. Let’s allow Markus to speak:
I would like to express my sincere thanks to our customers worldwide for the great trust they have placed in us again in 2022. The record result in 2022 clearly proves that our attractive product range and our brand are very popular with customers. I look forward to our centenary year in 2023 with great joy and confidence.
That’s right, 2023 marked 100 years for BMW and there are bikes and celebrations to be held but that is talk for another day.
It is no surprise (because it has been the case for many, many years), the big GS bikes are the drivers of Motorrad’s best year ever. With almost 60,000 units ( or over a quarter of all sales), the R 1250 GS and R 1250 GSA machines headed out the showroom door big numbers. It is good to be the originator and arguably the king of the adventure mountain. To put this number in perspective, and to compare with another German-owned brand, Ducati recently heralded their best year ever with 61,562 bikes sold. BMW sold almost as many of the two big GS bikes as Ducati sold of all the company’s models. Specifically, in the same category, the Multistrada V4 sold 10,716 units.
Even if you are selling bikes in the premium range, it is good to have something for those with less dollars to spend as those customers may eventually have more to spend. This is a lesson the entire industry desperately needs to learn for its own future benefit – especially in North America. The second most popular pair of bikes was the G 310 GS and G 310 R which accounted for 24,000 sold bikes around the world.
Next on the list are the inline-four bikes of which there are four representing the sportiest end of the BMW spectrum. The S 1000 RR accounted for 10,0000 while the M 1000 RR, S 1000 R and S 1000 XR kicked in an additional 13,500 units.
So that is well over 100,000 bikes. BMW sells a lot more models to account for the other 90,000 units. Some of those are probably struggling to gain or keep traction but those numbers are not provided. Nonetheless, when you have some true stars it is more comfortable supplying a few niche segments.
BMW did state that they sold 5000 units of the CE 04 electric scooter which they believe clearly indicates that the future of urban transportation is electric.
The best market for BMW was Germany which is also no surprise as Germans bought 24,129 bikes. The USA accounted for 17,690 bikes and interestedly Brazil, where BMW does have manufacturing facilities, contributed 13,501 sales.
Will the press of 100 years make 2023 Motorrad’s best year ever again? We will wait and see.
