Inmate Photos of the Week (#3-2023)

ADVrider.com

Good day, Inmates and Visitors, and welcome to ADVrider.com’s Photos of the Week. I’d like to start off by saying a big thank you to all those who submitted. We called, and you came running! So thanks to all who sent in their pictures. And we’ll start off this week with one of those submissions, a lovely shot of a place called Funny Rocks in Washington state. It’s “kind of a miniature Moab rock crawler spot,” says Earl, who was riding a 2022 KTM 500 EXC-F when he shot the pic. It’s such a nice combination of good composition, warm colors, and good, clear light that we couldn’t resist calling it our Featured Photo. And we love that tree—but please, somebody give it a bucket of water!
And below, two more from Washington state, according to Earl, starting with “giant rut on a 4×4 trail called ‘the Busywild’ in Elbe hills.” He says it’s “best not to ride it in winter.” No kidding.

And here is the entrance to the Naches Pass Trail. “When it’s dry you could probably get most bikes over it.”

Good road, but a little risky
Here is a road on the T5 between Chissasa and Mwinilunga in the Northwest Province of Zambia, photo shot by @Mr.mcgillaj a few months ago while out and about on his 2006 BMW R1200 GS Adventure. “This is a good road compared to many others and is known as the vehicle destroyer.” A little ironic, that.

Louisiana swamp
In the winter, says @Ritten, “the swamps lose a lot of their ground cover and the cypress trees are much more visible.” He calls the bike in the pic below a “southern Louisiana Swamp Donkey,” but in reality it’s a 2022 BMW R1250 GS Adventure. “I found a 2 track levee that followed an old bayou through this swamp. Photo was taken in Chackbay, Louisiana.” The shot was taken just a few weeks ago.

A ray of sunshine
According to some, KTMs can manufacture their own light, though this was not happening here. Still, a great motorcycle, the 2022 890 Adventure, and we’re not surprised that the sun went looking for it at Hole in the Wall picnic area off the Needles Highway, near Custer, South Dakota, last June. @AR Twindriver says he and his wife “spent a week riding the Black Hills. She rode her new Aprilia Tuareg 660. Lots of excellent pavement and dirt to ride.”

Same KTM 8890 Adventure, now at the top of Scotch Creek Pass, west of Purgatory, Colortado. “We stayed a few nights in Silverton to ride then a few in Creede. Never get directions from a local on a SXS drinking Coors at 10 am. It was a fun ride, no injuries or damage.”

AR Twindriver says the photo below pictures “my first wife on her little dual sport crossing a dried up Piney Creek between Walnut and Salus, AR. Early fall ride to Jasper for lunch.”

And below, “my first wife on her new Aprilia.” This shot was taken at a pull-out on the Needles Highway, also near Custer, South Dakota, in June 2022.

He’s one of three
@The Bear says the pic below shows his buddy Peter “(all three of us are called Peter)” on a Peters Run to the Glowworm Tunnel in the Blue Moutains west of Sydney in Australia. “This used to be a railway line, which is why it is so smooth.” That’s a Yamaha Ténéré, maybe a 2021 edition. This photo is still fresh enough to smell the fixer.

The photo below, however, is less fresh, even though taken by the same guy. “On my way north for a break on a road test bike, found this sign near Bellingen in northern NSW, Australia, on the Grafton road. My immediate thought: ‘You’re kidding, right?’” Can’t argue with you there, Mr. B.

Albuquerquequerque
Yeah, we put in one too many querque’s, but we couldn’t help it; it’s just such a fun city to spell. The shots below were taken by @chilejack a few years ago, and he says they’re focused on the “desert area west of Albuquerque near the Rio Puerco.” We note that he doesn’t imbibe in additional querque’s, but we like his contribution and we thank him for it. That’s a 2018 Husky FX 350 in Mr. Jack’s photos.

Architecture? Sure, but it’s art, too!
Here’s what @kap384 has to say about the picture featuring a gas station and his 2016 Honda CRF1000L .
This photo was taken mid-July last year in front of the only Frank LLoyd Wright designed gas station in Cloquet, MN. This was Day 3 of my 9 day trip starting in Alberta and through Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana. During the first 24 hours I successfully earned a Saddlesore 1000 travelling from Calgary, Alberta to Kenora, Ontario. Checked out more Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in Iowa, hit up the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore, and took in lots of Minutemen Cold War history. Only downside was the intense heat in the central US in mid-July. Can’t wait for a solo trip this year!

We can personally attest to the fact that Calgary-to-Kenora is a long (though relatively flat) motorcycle ride. Ouch.
Shining sands
Here is a photo taken in September at the Alvord Desert in Oregon by @coyotetrips and featuring a 2000 Honda XRV750 Africa Twin and a 2008 Kawasaki KLR650. “There is no water in the photo. The sunrise reflects on the polished desert surface.” That’s a very tidy campsite, too.

Local info
Here is a photo “from an early scouting run in ’21 for a guided tour to be used at the Touratech/DirtDaze Rally in New Hampshire,” says @PackinDirt, who was riding a Yamaha Tenere 700.
We stopped at a historical marker along the Bayley-Hazen Military Road in Peacham, Vermont and this local came out to give us a very in-depth history of the village. He was born and raised within several hundred feet of where we were standing. We included some of this local lore in our presentation to the attendees who came on the tour.

And this photo is from October 2021 on the Main coast with the morning sun just breaking over the trees on the far side of the inlet. “I had looked at the weather and saw a nice slice of weather coming for the weekend. So I packed up my ’00 VFR800 Interceptor, Buttercup, and headed for the coast. It was a little frosty in the morning but the afternoons were sunny and warm. Perfect late-season get away.”

Fire in the Sequoias
The following two photos are from Raphael, who says he was planning a summer trip to Yosemite in California last year, hoping to ride his 2016 Honda NC700 over the Tioga Pass. He settled on the weekend after the 4th of July “to avoid the crowds.”
But the day before I got there, someone started the Washburn fire in the Sequoia grove near the south entrance. The rangers closed the road about 2 hours after I got in, then evacuated the whole south part of the park (not my rental, surrounded by an older burn scar). The picture shows the fire going down towards the road just south of Wavona. Had to exit the park through the West entrance through some beautiful twisties, but that section also burnt a few weeks later.

The second pic is one of five helicopters which were fighting the blaze with water from the Merced River. Dipping between the trees to fill their bucket a few hundred yards from the “swinging bridge,” where people were playing in the water while keeping an eye on the fire.
The smell of smoke was all over the park, and visibility was very variable, but the red/orange sun and smokey views made for a really amazing ride to the top. [got some of those pics, but no bike in them]

And so we end this week rather dramatically, with a fabulous shot by Raphaeli, though of a tragic event. With the climate heating up, forest fires are more and more likely to occur and to be huge and costly in terms of everything. Let’s all be careful out there!
And now, thank you for visiting and thank you to the contributors, and we’ll see you next week! And please remember to
