(Honda/)While it’s nice to dream of leather fringe and sportbikes, those of us who live in nightmarish Blade Runner–like cities depend on small-displacement machines to actually get places cheaply and quickly. With few exceptions (cough, Kawasaki), every motorcycle or powersports company on earth knows this and offers at least one small-displacement scooter option. Honda arguably owes its entire existence to people needing inexpensive, practical transportation.Why is Motorcyclist covering scooters? The Honda Activa scooter currently sold in India, on which the Honda Navi is based, once sold 141,996 units in a single month (September 2013). That’s equal to Honda’s entire annual sales figure in North America. Most of the world travels by scooter. Regardless of region, numbers and money matter.Called an “adventure scooter,” the ADV concept was unveiled in India in 2019 with a sturdier duplex-cradle steel-tube design, rather than the typical “underbone” design common with classic scooters. Ironically, this means traveling at near-highway speeds is more stable and less “adventurous,” some might say. But it obviously opens up possibilities and increases rider safety and confidence.Building on the ADV150 that came to US shores in 2021, the 2024 ADV160 is clearly “ten better,” to use Spinal Tap thinking. A new larger fuel-injected four-valve engine is now 156.9cc—7.6cc up from the previous 149.3cc two-valve engine. Efficiency is said to be improved as well with reduced emissions. It gets rider aids like Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) to help out novice riders in low-traction settings as well as ABS for the front brake. (Honda/)The classic Honda V-Matic automatic transmission means you just twist and go. It’s basically CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), but hey, nice name. It drives 16 hp and 9.8 lb.-ft. of torque, an extra 1.2 ponies and 0.4 lb.-ft. from the 150 predecessor. More is more, regardless of what you ride.Riders and passengers get two additional liters of storage, 30 total, to store helmets and various stuff. The windscreen now gets two positions, adjustable without tools. Despite the frame separating the rider’s legs, the leg shield has been widened. Seat has been lowered 0.6 inch, as have the handlebars.Any college student knows scooters are basically free money for petty criminal elements. Honda’s Smart Key system allows remote starting, said to be inaccessible to a third party when the on/off switch is used correctly. Failing that, an anti-theft mechanism locks the handlebar if “someone” tries starting the scooter by force. For the garage-less, an additional chain or Kryptonite option might not be a bad idea.On that subject, the MSRP is $4,499. It’s Honda’s top-of-the-line scooter. This slides under the comparable Suzuki Burgman 200 at $4,999 MSRP, but more than, say, a Piaggio Liberty 150 S at $3,299 MSRP. The former Suzuki gets you liquid-cooling, while the former Piaggio gets you more beer and rent money left over. Honda Grom owners, take note: The ADV160 gets you way more storage, practicality, and 6-plus horsepower more for an extra $900.
